I have an adult daughter I love to travel with and we have
been fortunate to go several places around the world
together. As the saying goes she would pack everything but
the kitchen sink and I knew if I had forgotten something she
would have it. When she would come home for Christmas we
would always laugh that she had to bring two suit cases and
a carry on for a seven day stay.
This same daughter came back from a trip to Switzerland and
Prague this year and informed me she had only taken a
carry-on bag. I was astonished. I asked her if she felt like
she needed more and she said no.
Advantages to using only a carry-on bag when flying:
?It is wonderful not checking bags and having to wait in
line to check them, and then wait even longer for them to
come off the belt to pick up. This saves a lot of time and
frustration.
?Knowing that your bag wouldn't be lost.
?Not having heavy baggage to lug up and down stairs and off
and on trains or other modes of transportation.
?Packing only the essentials.
?Saving money by not having to pay money to check one or
more bags.
So how on earth do you pack just a carry-on bag instead of
larger bags? I just went to Japan for 10 days so I have some
firsthand knowledge of how to do this. At first I had to
receive constant reassurance from my daughter that I could
do it because frankly I didn't know how I could do it. When
packing only a carry-on there is not the luxury of packing
clothing "just in case I might want it", planning ahead is
very important. Everything you pack will be used.
?First of all check with your airline, this can be done on
line, to find out what their measurement restrictions are.
Domestic and International can be different. Measure your
bag three ways; length wise, the depth and side to side. Add
these three together and you have the size of your bag.
?I still pack everything in plastic bags, by squeezing out
the air you can get more in them. Rolling your clothes takes
up less space. If you are concerned about wrinkles you can
buy wrinkle free clothes, use the hotel's iron, or lay them
flat for your outgoing trip and then as you collect things
on your trip roll them up for the return trip.
?Wear one blouse and take two other blouses for a total of
three. These can be two short sleeves and one long sleeve if
going to a warm climate, or reversed for a cold climate.
Check the local weather before you pack.
?Wear one long pair of pants and pack two short pair, or
reversed depending on the weather. If you like to wear
skirts or dresses, change out one of these.
?Take as many socks and underwear as you are willing to wash
out?I mean if you don't want to wash only every four to six
days then take that many.
?Wear your bulkier shoes and pack your lighter ones. If you
will only need one pair, that saves even more space. Two
pair might be a good idea if you are planning on going to
the beach, out for the evening, or if you think you may get
your feet wet.
?For cosmetics take as few as possible and in 3 oz. or
smaller sizes as those are the TSA rules. Put all gels and
liquids in a quart size plastic zip bag before getting to
the airport. Place them in the outside pocket of your
luggage and you can take it out easily to go through
security.
?Pack enough medications for the duration of your trip and a
few extra pills in case of emergencies. Keep these in their
original bottles, ask the pharmacists to put them in the
smallest bottles available with a label.
?If you need a curling iron or blow dryer buy a travel size.
Everyplace I have been are now providing blow dryers. Buy
smaller hair brushes.
?Use a bungee cord to attach a jacket to your bag to stroll
through the airport, doesn't take up valuable space on the
inside of your bag.
I do not recommend the hard suitcases as a carry-on bag
because they don't have any pockets on the outside you can
put things in. Like your plastic bag with liquids. And other
things you may need to tuck in at the last second.
If you travel often within the USA to relatives homes keep
things like blow dryers, extra tooth paste, brushes and so
forth in a closed container that can be kept out of their
way on a shelf or under the bed at their homes. This saves
you space when traveling and keeps you organized.
If you travel often keep small size products in the plastic
zip lock and keep them with your travel supplies. The next
time you travel your personal items will be all ready to go
and this will save you time.
If you are traveling with children get them carry-ons they
can not only pull, but holds all their clothing and stuff,
even if you have to carry it along with yours, a paying
customer is allowed one carry-on and one personal item. Too
often I see kids just pulling little dinky carry-ons.
You are also allowed a personal item so use your back pack
for your book to read, whatever you take to hold your I.D.,
money, treats, and other things you want to get to without
opening the overhead bin. For the children load their
backpacks with things they will need for the trip,
activities and treats would be the main things to include.
Time management is important to all of us and you will not
only make the most of your time but you will see that being
organized has its distinct advantages even when traveling.

It is characterized by the uncontrolled accumulation of
blood cells. In AML, the bone marrow makes many unformed
cells called blasts. AML starts with a change to a single
cell in the bone marrow. With AML, the leukemic cells are
often referred to as blast cells. Acute lymphocytic leukemia
(ALL) is a fast-growing cancer in which the body produces a
large number of immature white blood cells (lymphocytes).
AML is the most common acute leukemia affecting, and its
incidence increases with age. Acute leukemia is a rapidly
progressing disease that results in the accumulation of
immature, functionless cells in the marrow and blood.
Causes of Leukemia
The cause of leukemia is unknown. At present, no one knows
what causes leukemia. However, scientists have discovered
some risk factors that increase a person?s chance of getting
the disease. These may include excess exposure to radiation,
or prior treatment for a malignancy, or having had a
previous blood disorder. However, most people who develop
leukemia do not have any of these risk factors.
CLL is rare in China and Japan, and remains rare among
Japanese people who move to the U.S. This suggests that
genetic factors play some role in the development of CLL.
It is now known that all cancers, including leukemia, begin
as a mutation in the genetic material?the DNA
(deoxyribonucleic acid)?within certain cells. The external
or internal causes of such change probably add up over a
lifetime. Leukemia begins when one or more white blood cells
experience DNA loss or damage. Those errors are copied and
passed on to subsequent generations of cells.
Symptoms of Leukemia
Leukemia either causes a shortage of functioning white blood
cells - which can impair the immune system - or a buildup of
extra white blood cells. In acute leukemias the extra white
blood cells are mostly immature whereas in chronic leukemias
the white blood cells are mature but still function poorly.
In either case, fewer platelets (the type of blood cells
that help stop bleeding) are produced causing excessive
bleeding. Minor injuries can result hard-to-stop bleeding,
and large bruises. Tiny red spots may appear just under the
skin.
Leukemia Treatment
Chemotherapy may be used to treat some of the symptoms of
chronic lymphocytic leukemia, such as fatigue, anemia, or
enlarged lymph nodes. It may be necessary to receive blood
or platelet transfusions, depending on the person's blood
tests. Radiation is occasionally used to treat excessive
lymph node enlargement.
The reply is positive Yes. The treatment is in two phases:
induction therapy and continuation/maintenance therapy. The
important treatment in induction therapy is to reduce the
number of leukemia cells and the main aim is to stimulate a
remission. The next phase of treatment commences after a
patient goes into remission. In this the main act is to
destroy any remaining cells and to lengthen the remission
period as long as possible.
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells.
Surgery is usually not an option. Surgery is usually not an
option because leukemia cells can spread to all the organs
via the blood stream and the lymph vessels. Radiation
therapy is the use of x- rays or other high-energy rays to
kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. The replacement of sick
bone marrow with healthy and fit bone marrow is called Bone
marrow transplantation.

I got the idea for this article after recently sitting
through several bouts of forex intervention by the Swiss
National Bank, which has used different tactics to
discourage appreciation of the Swiss Franc. Central bank
intervention may be a new event for those who have recently

forms intervention can take and the effectiveness of each is
useful for those trading in the currency market.
I got the idea for this article after recently sitting
through several bouts of forex intervention by the Swiss
National Bank, which has used different tactics to
discourage appreciation of the Swiss Franc. Central bank
intervention in the forex market may be new for those forex
traders who have recently entered the forex market. An
understanding of the different forms intervention can take
and the effectiveness of each is useful for those trading in
the currency market.
Forex intervention has been going on for as long as I can
remember although there is not one set of rules that central
banks follow. Rather, forex intervention can be employed in
a variety of methods, each having a different level of
effectiveness. The recent forex interventions by the Swiss
National bank to prevent the CHF from appreciating sparked
the idea to write an articleon this subject.
Types of Intervention 1) Intervention can take the form of
being unilateral (i.e. one central acting alone) or
coordinated (i.e. various central banks acting in concert).
2) The results of the intervention (i.e. buying or selling a
currency) can be sterilized or left un-sterilized. When
currency intervention is sterilized, the central bank
neutralizes the impact by adding or draining reserves from
its domestic money market. When intervention is left
un-sterilized, the central bank allows the full impact of
such actions to either increase or reduce the supply of
liquidity.
3) The central bank may look for the shock effect by being
visible in its forex intervention. This may see the central
bank surprise the market and come in via an electronic
platform, which gets flashed across wore services. This
often sees a sharp reaction in the market but the more times
employed, the less impact it tends to have.
Some central banks may disguise their actions by using
surrogates to buy or sell its currency. In this way it can
disguise its actions and keep the market guessing. Some call
this stealth intervention. There is speculation that the
Japan's MOF (Ministry of Finance) and Bank of Japan employ
this tactic but only insiders know whether this is true and
if so, to what extent it is used.
5) Those countries with managed currency regimes have become
a factor in intervention. In these cases, the central bank
uses the proceeds from forex intervention to adjust its
currency reserve basket to maintain the ratio of dollars and
other currencies. Central banks often use this tactic to
keep its currency from appreciating although it can work on
both sides.
What types of forex intervention tend to be more effective?
As a rule, it is easier for a central bank to intervene to
slow the appreciation of its currency than to support a
falling currency. Forex intervention tends to be more
effective when other actions are taken in concert, such as
an increase/decrease in interest rates to make a currency
more/less attractive.
Coordinated forex intervention is generally more effective
than unilateral intervention in the currency market. The
most notable example is the 1986 Plaza Accord, where the G-7
countries agreed to work together to drive down an
overvalued USD. It is a harder task for a central bank,
acting unilaterally, to intervene effectively.
Un-sterilized intervention is more effective than sterilized
intervention. Traders look to see if central banks sterilize
intervention and allow interventions to increase or decrease
(as the case may be) the supply of its currency. Most
interventions tend to be sterilized as central banks take
offsetting measures to limit the impact on domestic monetary
conditions.
The more predictable a central; bank is in its
interventions, the less the impact each time employed. This
is often referred to the law of diminishing returns as the
market gets used to it and adjusts its strategies
accordingly. The initial reaction to a surprise intervention
tends to have the greatest impact. Traders also look to see
whether the central bank intervenes at lower/higher levels
or gets aggressive by continuing to buy/sell at higher/lower
levels. The latter tends to see the most impact but runs a
risk as once the central bank steps back, the market tends
to reverse some of the earlier moves.
Stealth intervention is more of a gray area. The market only
suspects intervention when a central bank uses surrogates to
intervene and a lot depends on how much it wants to keep the
market guessing. the Swiss National Bank (SNB) switched
tactics in its recent forex interventions and apparently
started placing orders through the BIS (Bank for
International Settlements). This fueled speculation that the
SNB was behind the BIS bids for EUR/USD and USD/CHF but it
was never confirmed. The Bank of Japan and Ministry of
Finance tend to be more secretive but the market suspects
they have been employing stealth intervention for years. One
reason may be that they did not want to be accused of trying
to engineer an undervalued currency. Given Japan's
dependence on exports, there is suspicion that it tries to
limit the JPY upside to help its exporters through stealth
intervention, thereby avoiding any criticism from other
trading partner countries.
Central bank intervention to manage a currency's range and
limit its movements seems to have become more of a factor as
the global reserve managers looks to diversify reserves.
Intervention by the Russian central bank, which be active
intervening in USD/RUB. In the past, most reserves were held
in USD. This has changed as countries look to diversify.
Let's say the Russian currency reserves basket is comprised
of 55% in US dollars (USD) and 45% in EUROS. When it
intervenes by buying USD/RUB (i.e. selling USD) to prevent
its currency from appreciating, it needs selling 45% of the
USD it just accumulated and buy EUROS to maintain the 55/45
ration in its currency basket. Alternatively, when the
central bank intervenes by selling USD/RUB (i.e. selling
USD), it then needs to buy dollars and sell EUROS to
maintain the 55/45 ratio for its currency basket. This was a
factor ion the forex market last year in the EUR/USD sharp
rise when the dollar was in a broad downtrend and the
USD/RUB was falling. The Russian central bank intervened on
a daily basis by buying USD and conversion of some of the
proceeds to EUROS helped fuel the EUR/USD rise. It was then
a factor the other way, pressuring EUR/USD lower later that
year and into 2009 during the global financial crisis when
the USD/RUB was under sharp upward pressure and the central
bank had to sell USD to defend its weakening currency.
So when you see that a central bank intervenes, you have to
explore further to assess its potential impact and adjust
your strategies according. Is it unilateral or coordinated?
Are there any additional measures taken to support the
intervention? How visible is the central bank intervention?
Is there stealth intervention going on? What is the impact
on major currencies from intervention to maintain a managed
float? These just scratch the surface but give some insights
into forex intervention.

This newest collection of Canadian fantastic fiction looks
at the novella (17,500 to 40,000 words), the hardest-to-sell
length of fiction.
In a small town in Alberta, an intact baby woolly mammoth is
found buried in the snow. When Samuel, the town?s "smart
person," touches the carcass, the mammoth?s life force is
transferred to him, and he begins to have weird visions
about being chased by beings on two legs. During a town-wide
party, with mammoth stew as the main course (over Samuel?s
strong objections), strange things start happening, and
several of the townspeople turn into cavemen, and chase
Samuel as if he is the baby mammoth.
A young warrior, in feudal Japan, is sent to a small town to
find out why they haven?t sent in their annual amount of
rice. Taking along his concubine and his brother, the mayor
of the town says that it is not their fault; the land is
somehow cursed. Solving the mystery, the warrior is shocked
to find that his concubine and his brother are not exactly
what they seem. They are mythological beings in human form.
Superheroes in present-day Korea deal with maniacal
villains, inter-Korean politics, corporate downsizing (and
overbearing mothers). As the world faces environmental
catastrophe, reality-TV adventurers battle giant squids in
the very deep ocean. Another small town in Alberta conducts
pagan rituals during the year as if it was totally normal
(though not everyone agrees). A pair of average women with
the power of life and death travel the streets of
present-day Montreal.
Here is another strong bunch of stories from north of the
border. They are very easy to read, and very weird. It?s
recommended.

What is the Meiji Era?
The Meiji Era was a time period in Japan, under which
Emperor Meiji started Japan?s modernization. Under Meiji,
Japan climbed to world power status. Emperor Meiji?s rule
ran from October 23, 1868 to July 30, 1912. The Meiji
restoration effectively brought the Shogun feudal system to
an end and restored imperial rule.
The Effects of Meiji and the Restoration
The Meiji and imperial restoration was largely responsible
for the industrialization of Japan which allowed Japan to
rise as a military power by 1905. This was accomplished in
mainly two ways: the first was the 3,000 or so foreign
experts that were brought into Japan to teach an assortment
of specialist subjects; the second was government subsidies
to students to go abroad into mainly Europe and America.
This vast influx of western culture and ideals impacted many
aspects of Japanese life in this era, one being the arts.
Art in Japan during the Meiji Era
These new western ideas split Japan in two directions,
upholding traditional values or assimilate these new,
different ? sometimes radical ? new ideas into their own
culture. By the early 1900?s, many European forms of art
were already well known and their intermingling with
Japanese art created some noteworthy architectural feats
such as the Tokyo Train Station and the National Diet
Building. During the Meiji Era, manga were first drawn;
manga was inspired from French and English political
cartoons. The polarity of traditional versus western cause
two distinct art styles to develop: Yooga
(Western-influenced) and Nihonga (Traditional Japanese
style).
Yooga was characterized as Renaissance style painting ? oil
paintings on a canvas, dramatic lighting, the subject matter
is adorned in western attire, using the third dimension and
using techniques such as vanishing points and having distant
objects be vague. Two artists who were important to the
expansion of western style painting and art were Kawakami
Togai and Koyama Shoutaro. Because of these two men, and
Togai?s assistant Takahashi Yuichi, western art became a
school of art in the Meiji period. However the pendulum
swung both ways; while many seemed to embrace the new
western lifestyle, there were also those who opposed change.
This rapid influx of foreign culture also caused a state of
confusion, many Japanese felt that Japan had lost its
identity and would often look towards Asia for a reminder of
where they fit in. This also had an influence on the style
at the time, Yokoyama Taikan?s ?Ryuutou? or ?Floating
Lanterns? is an example of an attempt to confirm Japan?s
identity as part of Asia. The Meiji era ended in 1912 with
the death of the Emperor.

France, Japan, India, England, Saudi?
Most citizens of any nation will say that their country is
the best on Earth. Of course, there can only be one greatest
nation, just like there can only be one gold medalist or
gold medal team in each event in the Olympics. There are
many US Citizens who refuse to say that the United States is
the greatest nation in the World. Why? Well, they feel it is
too subjective and that it shows too much ego or run-away
nationalism.
Indeed, the United States is the greatest nation in history,
but those who wish to debate this say; "What about China,
that's been together for 3000 years... or India? England
would have a problem with your statement, and certainly the
French, who we base our democracy on. What about Canada,
Japan or even Saudi Arabia?"
You can certainly see why this could be a highly debated
statement. So, let us address these other great nations. Do
they really hold a candle to the US? After all, we have a
17.1 trillion dollar economy, the largest middle class, the
lowest unemployment. Canada wouldn't even have an economy as
large as they do if it were not for us buying 80 billion
dollars a year from them more than the buy from us.
Same with Japan and Saudi Arabia exists because we send
money there for oil (about $200 Billion a year). England
cannot compare with its high taxes and lower standard of
living. France is a socialist country and we have seen the
riots and high unemployment numbers. India is a highly
populated nation with a billion people, but the standard of
living really cannot compare to that of the US. Thus, we
might want to reconsider denial of the fact that the US is
the greatest nation ever created in the history of this
species.

Abroad In Japan Program
One of the most exciting parts about being a college student
is idea of a great big world at our fingertips. Nothing
defines this more than the feeling you get when you sign up
for one of the many college study abroad programs made
available at most colleges and universities. A college study
abroad program provides a fresh approach in learning in a
foreign country and a new culture.
Japan is the Asian nation which probably attracts the
largest number of international students to come and study
in its universities and private institutes. They do so in an
effort to carve a niche for themselves within the global
market in any of the numerous fields waiting for them. A
Japan study abroad program is facilitated in the schools,
colleges, junior colleges, universities as well as a number
of private institutes that specialize in offering a wide
variety of courses and subjects.
A study abroad Japan program is one of the most sought after
college study abroad programs offered by universities. A
number of schools from across the country encourage students
to learn a little more about learning overseas and
furthering their education in other cultures. Students often
study abroad as a way of obtaining once in a lifetime
experiences that a traditional educational atmosphere
couldn't offer.
Each student has their own reasons why they would want to
travel to Japan to study. For some it is the chance to find
a professional internship in their booming economy; maybe it
is Japan's beautiful landscapes; and for others it is the
chance to immerse themselves in its ancient culture.
However, the greatest appeal of a study abroad Japan program
is its academic environment.
Students get the chance to learn among state-of-the-art
technology and acquire the knowledge which has enabled
Japan's phenomenal economic growth. It can be in the field
of electronics, Japanese literature, medicine or
international business administration; Japanese universities
offer course studies or research programs in nearly every
academic field.
While many students are intimidated by the potential
problems cause by the language barrier, there are more
advantages than disadvantages to a study abroad program.
Many students cite the three best things about a study
abroad Japan program as learning an additional foreign
language, learning to be more independent, and becoming more
responsible for them while also learning new things about
themselves. It allows students to become more open-minded
while learning to respect the beliefs, customs and
traditions of individuals from different cultures, race and
religion.
